Small town hardware stores can either leave you making a special run to the “big box” guys, or they can surprise you with their expertise and selection. This small mountain town is fortunate to have the kind with surprises. When Rob & Gwen Whitten bought Plain Hardware in ’97, they sought to do more than run the best home & garden store for miles; they wanted to create a center for their community. Publishing a 6-page seasonal newsletter, with tips & tricks and local news, says a lot about their grand presence in Plain. Check out their cool t-shirt contest — anyone with a t-shirt is eligible. The fact that you’ll have to visit their store to use your prize is just an added bonus.
