Hawaii and shave ice go together like beaches and bikinis, but it wasn’t always that way. When the sugar cane plantations closed down and the immigrant Japanese workers opened their own grocery stores, they took their traditional icy treats from a weekend laborers’ secret to a worldwide phenomenon. Mamoru and Momoyo Matsumoto opened their store in the 50s, and their North Shore location has been bringing in the surfers and tourists by the thousands ever since. Scaled down to shave ice and souvenirs and run by their son and his wife, this Hawaiian landmark is still going strong after almost 60 years and making over 1000 shave ice cones a day!
