In April 1934, after the end of the Prohibition, twenty one year old Hank Reverman opened The Blue Moon Tavern in Seattle’s University District. By the 1950’s it had become a haven for beatnicks, writers, intellects, feminists, and student radicals while often drawing the contempt of conservative Seattle. The original sign of the woman in a bathing suit can be found in the back of the 1971 addition to the tavern on the stage where musicians and bands still come to play. The Blue Moon survived a threat to be demolished in 1989 which resulted in a fifty year lease until 2034. Gus Hellthaler has owned the bar since 1982.
